The C-HR is the new sports/off-road/coupe/bullshit from Toyota. And I can barely stand to look at it. It’s not overwhelmingly ugly, but it’s just so . . . purposeless.
But let’s start with the name. C-HR. There’s a movie production company called The Asylum . They’re most famous for producing Sharknado , but before that they made a number of tiny budget knock-off films, apparently called “mockbusters.” Atlantic Rim, Transmorphers, The Da Vinci Treasure ; stuff like that. Anyway , what I’m trying to say is that C-HR sounds like a cheap ripoff of CR-V.
Back to the looks. It’s dramatic and mostly terrible. But there are some positive aspects! . . . I assume. It has the most deeply sculpted body I’ve seen on a production car. It’s actually kind of impressive.
But what gets me most is how utterly useless it is. It’s a coupe “ ” so rear seat room and cargo space will be miserly, it’s not AWD so it’ll be useless as far off-road as these thing go, (like, in a field maybe) and it’s a Toyota so it won’t even be fun to drive.
And then look at that D-pillar and imagine how utterly useless that rear window is. They needn’t have bothered.
And
they’ve nicked the taillights off a Honda Civic.

Having a thick d-pillar, & tiny rear window mail slot will increase the chances of the Camry dent. Saying that I’m use to driving with massive blind spots, my old job I drove a panel van with no side windows.

It looks like a civic from the back.

Also the interior is terrible, the “integrated” tablet looks like an afterthought and it’s huge!
Also it’s CVT only so it instantly makes it worse than all of it’s competitors.

It just looks like a downmarket Rav-4. Honda did it with the HR-V, Toyota had to follow suite.

There’s a manual on the 1.2.

I kinda like it, looks good and un-Toyota-like in the flesh. Too bad it doesn’t come with 200hp though.

Probably Europe only though :(

I thought it was a nissan with the D pillar slope/cut-out/kink. Looks a bit too much like their design language to me.

I always sold that thing as fast as I could...

They’re pretty much the same. I think the C-HR pulls the look off better, but it’s a weirdly derivative detail.

The interior is its best feature, in my opinion, but that harsh auto show lighting certainly does it no favors.

Ah the good old Costa de Almalfi rally. $264k credits in the game for selling that thing.

From what I’ve read from European sources it’s the only (FWD) Toyota that’s actually fun to drive. Very different from other Toyotas. They might have very different chassis tuning for the US though, and did someone mention you can only get one with a CVT in the US? Ugh.
About the looks: while I can’t say I like how it looks, I will say that I appreciate it’s not so offensively boring as other Toyotas.

Surely you can at least order one with AWD even if it isn’t standard?

I’m pretty sure I read on Car & Driver that it was fwd only.

I’m not sure how being in the grays works, but at least this comment is. :)
